Teachers from Dubai private schools were invited to a celebration at the Knowledge and Human Development Authority's headquarters. The event brought together teachers who previously participated in the Teachers of Dubai social media campaign, as well as What Works, and Teach Together.
Each teacher was presented with the first Teachers of Dubai book, featuring the stories of 50 teachers previously profiled on the #TeachersOfDubai social media pages.
Speaking at the event, KHDA director general Dr Abdulla Al Karam said: "World Teachers' Day is a great opportunity for us to say thank you to teachers in Dubai for inspiring their students, for giving to their communities, and for simply being who they are. This book has been made possible by the hard work and determination of our teachers who believe in giving their best always. It shines a light on the wonderful work done by teachers. When we feel appreciated and have a strong sense of wellbeing, we make a strong, positive impact on the community around us."
The event included the KHDA Mums, a group of five parents with children at Dubai schools who interview teachers for Teachers of Dubai. Teachers also took part in a positive education session hosted by the Dubai chapter of the International Positive Education Network.
Some of KHDA's initiatives for teachers include:
#TeachersOfDubai – An ongoing project launched on World Teachers' Day 2015, designed to bring Dubai's community together in support of teachers and teaching. 'Teachers of Dubai' shares positive stories and experiences from different teachers in Dubai, which enables the community to show its appreciation, and raises the status of teaching in Dubai. Nearly 500 teachers from 100 schools in Dubai have been featured.
What Works - Now in its fifth year, What Works brings together teachers from across Dubai's schools to share what they do best. It raises the standard of teaching and learning across Dubai's private education sector by focusing on proven positive practice and creating connections between Dubai teachers. More than 18,000 teachers have attended 21 What Works events since 2012. The first What Works of this academic year will take place in November.
Teach Together – Started in 2017, Teach Together supports the Year of Giving and enables KHDA to have greater understanding of teachers' work and lives, with the aim of further improving their wellbeing. During Teach Together, the director general of KHDA Dr Abdulla Al Karam spends time with teachers as their teaching assistant. The relationships we are building during Teach Together give us insights which will help to further improve education in Dubai.
